Cubico have completed the first phase of community consultation for Frodsham Solar, a proposed solar farm on Frodsham Marshes. A summary of the consultation has been produced and more information can be found on their website.
Cycle North Cheshire have not voiced any opinion either in favour or against the plan to build the solar farm, as this sits outside of the objectives of our organisation. However, we feel that the construction of the solar farm presents an opportunity to develop better and safer cycling and walking paths in our area and we stated this in our response to the consultation.
If the building of the solar farm does proceed, we believe that the development should provide benefits to the community. The planning conditions should include terms that require the developers to create an increased amenity value within the project. One aspect could be new cycling/walking routes for both leisure and utility purposes.
We are expecting to contribute to the second phase of consultation in autumn 2024. Cubico have said that "for the second phase of consultation, [they] will be developing a Landscape Masterplan, which will include new permissive paths that will give additional access to the public across Frodsham Marshes for the lifetime of the project". This Landscape Masterplan will allow us to make a more thorough assessment on how the development will impact local cycling and walking infrastructure. We encourage residents to also review the plans and provide their own feedback.
Additionally, Cycle North Cheshire are in dialogue with the project’s consultants about the opportunities that could arise to improve the experience for visitors and to build leisure facilities within the scope of the project. We would be happy to collate any views and ensure they are aired within our discussions; please email us at cyclencheshire@mail.com if you would like to contribute.
