Cycle North Cheshire (CNC) has submitted feedback to Cadent for the second statutory consultation of the Hynet hydrogen pipeline project. We have raised concerns about the condition of key cycling and walking routes that are near the proposed pipeline, particularly National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 5 and nearby Restricted Byways (RBs).
CNC promotes cycling, walking, and wheeling across North Cheshire, working closely with local councils, Sustrans, and other cycling groups. Our feedback focuses on the poor surface quality of local routes, which are essential for both recreational users and emergency vehicle access. Surveys we conducted show that large sections of these routes are so degraded they are unsafe or impassable.
We provided examples of surface damage, including Lordship Lane, a section of NCN 5 where poor drainage has worsened conditions, and Straight Length, a feeder RB with deep ruts. We urge Cadent to work with landowners to set clear maintenance standards to ensure these routes are safe and accessible for all.

We also referenced Cheshire West and Chester's Local Plan (Policy DM 37), which aims to protect and enhance cycle routes and recreational paths, and we believe this should apply to the Hynet project.
CNC hopes Hynet will consider our feedback as they refine their plans. It is vital that this project works for both infrastructure development and the local community. We encourage everyone who uses these routes or is impacted by the project to submit their own feedback. This round of consultation ends on the 19th November 2024. Your voice is important in shaping the future of local cycling infrastructure.
